Hamid leads Cambridgeshire to victory!

News 23rd Feb 2010

When Hamid was approached by the LTA to captain the Cambridgeshire Under 18 boys County Team, he accepted with great pleasure. Having played county tennis for the past 15 years both at a junior and adult level, he relished the opportunity to be on the other side of the fence and use his experience and skills to help these up and coming players strive for success. To be asked to fulfil this role really demonstrated Hamid’s commitment and passion for junior tennis.

Hamid met with his team 1 Matt Nicholson-Lewis, 2 Sam Fleck, 3 Jack Thorndike, 4 Will Huyton, 5 James Morris, 6 Josh Lighthowler, 7 Ben McCan at Hills Road tennis centre for their first practice a week prior to the event. Working as Sam Flecks full time coach at Great Shelford Tennis Club meant there was one familiar face, but Hamid soon built up an excellent rapport with the other team members, which proved invaluable on their path to success. Keen to cement a strong team spirit Hamid insisted the team met for breakfast and helped by assistant team coach Alex Button, each day was started with team moral on a high and a positive attitude all round.

Cambridgeshire are in division four alongside Norfolk, Bedfordshire and West Scotland. Day one drew Cambridgeshire against Bedfordshire. Off to a flying start Cambridgeshire won 9-0. Day two saw Cambridgeshire face their rivals Norfolk. After some excellent tennis and some edge of your seat moments Cambridgeshire won 6-3. On the final and deciding day Cambridgeshire played West Scotland and proudly stormed to a 5-1 lead. A well deserved win for the Cambridgeshire team who after being presented with their winners medals and donned their best smiles for the photo call, went and celebrated their victory.

“ I thoroughly enjoyed taking on this role. Having worked with players competing at a high level both nationally and inter-nationally from various counties, this was my first experience captaining a Cambridgeshire team so it was a privilege to be asked. Having been a part of their victory I hope to be back next year and would like to thank the team for working hard and making this experience both rewarding and enjoyable” – Hamid
